Aqualogy participates in the new public-private water supply company in Ramos Arizpe (Mexico)
Aqualogy and Aguas de Saltillo (in which Agbar has a 45% stake) will participate in Aguas de Ramos Arizpe, S.A. de C.V., the new water supply and drainage company in the city of Ramos Arizpe (Mexico). The city council of Ramos Arizpe will have 51% of the new company; Aguas de Saltillo, 48%, and the government of the State of Coahuila, 1%. Aqualogy will be responsible for technical assistance for the management of the company.
The signing of the agreement yesterday was presided over by the State governor, Rubén Moreira, with the presence of Juan Antonio Guijarro, Aqualogy’s CEO; José Manuel Ramírez, Spain’s consul general in Monterrey; Óscar Pimentel, Secretary of Urban Management, Water and Territorial Organization of Coahuila; and the mayors of the city councils of Saltillo and Ramos Arizpe, Jericó Abramo and Ramón Oceguera.
During his intervention in the signing ceremony, the State governor, Rubén Moreira, stated: “Today we are making a major decision for Coahuila de Zaragoza, where 38 thousand new jobs have been created this year. A large part of them are due to the work of Aguas de Saltillo, thanks to its competitiveness and on eliminating the city’s water problems”.
In his participation, Juan Antonio Guijarro congratulated the governor and the mayors of Ramos Arizpe and Saltillo for their real collaboration in the search for a management model which solves the local problem of the lack of water in the Municipality of Ramos Arizpe with the support, collaboration and knowledge of Aqualogy.
The city of Ramos Arizpe forms part of the metropolitan area of the southeast of Coahuila state, together with Saltillo, the capital, and the municipality of Arteaga. Ramos Arizpe stands out in view of its economic activities as important companies from the automotive industry, construction, trade and services are located there. Coahuila produces 25% of the total vehicles in Mexico, the majority of them manufactured in Ramos Arizpe.
The municipality’s industrial estates have a very broad infrastructure. It moreover has an experienced work force specialized in the automotive industry, as it has technological schools and universities to train the workers.
The Municipality of Ramos Arizpe has a population of over 75 thousand inhabitants. However, like many municipalities of Mexico, it has experienced severe drinking water supply problems over the last decade. The growth and development of the city, the progressive deterioration due to the age of the supply system’s networks and hydraulic installations, the lack of maintenance of the facilities, among others, have become factors which have triggered situations which require an imminent solution. Faced with the situation in Ramos Arizpe, the municipal and state authorities decided to find a comprehensive solution to solve the long-standing water problem once and for all.
The mayor of the municipality and its city council, in the search for possible solutions and with their firm commitment to the inhabitants, suggest the creation of a similar situation to the one that is in operation in the neighbouring city of Saltillo, which experienced and suffered from the same problems as those now presented in Ramos Arizpe, and which after a few years has managed to overcome these problems and to completely turn around the operation of its water service, which has now become the most highly valued service by the inhabitants of Saltillo and is classified as the second best operator nationally.
The creation of a joint venture for water management in Ramos Arizpe will make it possible to guarantee the municipality’s drinking water service, avoiding the misuse of resources which should be aimed at conserving the water supply system for the city and its inhabitants.
